By the time the Spartans teed-off Monday morning, it possessed a 20-stroke lead and the weather was cooperating.
When the M State men left the course, they were celebrating a 34-stroke win and individual medalist honors for Brandon Sletmoen.
Putting together a two day total of 620, the Spartans were able to best its guests with two very low team rounds. The Rochester Yellowjackets finished in second, shooting a 654, followed by Mesabi Range with a 693.
The course did not have much roll to it in the two days of the tournament as the Saturday rain had dampen the fairways and greens.
Sletmoen was able to duplicate his day one success shooting another 71 to finish with a 142. Teammates Matt Koster (153), Matt Wagner (157), Rob Goff (158) and Brady Robertson (159) also had a solid tournament.
“I thought today was another nice display of depth for our team,” Spartan coach Jason Retzlaff said. “Matt Koster had a fantastic round shooting even par. He has been close all year long and really put it together today. Matt Wagner also played some great golf and really had some nice iron shots. Brandon Sletmoen put on a dominant performance shooting under par during both days. It’s great to see his confidence soaring like it is.”
In women’s play, Kari Larson of Rochester claimed medalist honors shooting a two-day score of 179, while M State’s Kari Larson finish with a 208.
“As a team, it’s good to see a number our players continue to improve. Our goal is to stay focused and peak at the Region Championship in a couple of weeks,” Retzlaff said.
The Spartans will now travel to Tower to compete at the Wilderness Golf Course in a tournament hosted by Mesabi Range Monday.
