Arrows hold off soaring CometsPublished 10:00am Wednesday, September 18, 2013
The Hillcrest Comet volleyball team continued to make strides Tuesday evening. With two of the three sets being to close for comfort, the visiting Ashby Arrows snuck away with a three set Little Eight Conference victory 25-23, 25-14, 25-21.
The Comets were able to force long volleys and play good net defense in set one , but saw the Arrows hold on to take the first set. Ashby turned up the heat in the second set as it breezed into the third.
In the final set, the Comets rediscovered its fire from the first set, but once again the Arrows would find a way to win as it claimed the three set match.
“The lady Comets gave their fans something to cheer about in sets one and three,” Comet coach Dessica Veum said. “The girls played together as a team and it showed in the close scores.”
The Arrows, although happy about the win, know they need to improve.
“I thought the girls played well tonight taking the Comets in three sets, which was a big plus for us. But there were a lot of unforced errors on our side of the net that we just have to get under control. We need to learn how to play our game, instead of playing to the other teams strengths, whoever we are playing.
The Arrows were hot from the service line as Paige Nelson, Amber Sundal and Alexis Ness combined for a 33 for 35 evening with nine aces.
The Comets will play another LEC foe Thursday as it travels to Underwood Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. match, while the Arrows will travel to Barrett to take on the West Central Area Knights in a 7:30 p.m. Thursday contest.
