Storm sweep over Fergus boys [UPDATED]Published 10:04am Wednesday, September 18, 2013 Updated 10:09am Wednesday, September 18, 2013
Despite continuing its improved play in the second half of the season, the Fergus Falls boys soccer team fell in a 2-1 match on Tuesday night at home against the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm.
The Storm started the scoring at the 33rd minute when Sadiq Hassan put a high arching shot over the top of Otter goalie Conner Hatfield. The goal came after several attempts on goal by the Otters at the other end.
Sauk Rapids added to their count in the second half at the 55th minute. Hatfield saved a shot on goal, but the ball got away and Issa Ibrahim put another shot towards the net. Otter defender Taylor Lemke kept the ball from going in the second time, but Ibrahim took another shot and increased the lead.
The Otters would break the shutout in the 71st minute as it tried to fight its way back into the match. Sam Rausch put a shot on goal from 20 yards that flew by the Storm goalie just inside the right goalpost.
While the Otters left its home field with the loss, strong play that kept it in the match throughout the night encouraged head coach Beau Krueger.
The Otters travel to St. Cloud to face Apollo in a Central Lakes Conference showdown on Thursday. The match starts at 7 p.m.
