I-94 BMX to celebrate season SaturdayPublished 9:33am Friday, September 20, 2013
As their season ends, BMX racers in Fergus Falls will gather on Saturday to celebrate. Organizers at I-94 BMX hope the day’s variety of races and events will provide plenty of fun for loyal riders and introduce the sport to others.
“It’s a celebration and a nice way to get everyone together at the track for the end of the season,” said track operator Logan Solberg. “Basically, we’re trying to get the word out and get some new riders.”
Registration will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Regular races will begin after registration and will culminate with a number of specialty races to give riders exciting challenges. A group dinner will follow the races.
Solberg said that inviting in new riders ensures better competition for the next year.
“It all stems down to the bigger number of kids you have attending the events the more they can compete,” Solberg said. “It gives more of a challenge to the riders that we do have and introduces more people to the sport.”
Saturday’s event also aims to show that racing is a safe and healthy sport that gets kids outside. Each summer, the sport has a number of 8- to 16-year-olds running the track. It is also a sport for all ages, and Solberg said the track has a range of participants from 3 to 44 years old.
Families line the track as well, and Solberg said each event gives family and friends an opportunity to cheer on their competitors. Solberg, who has a six-year-old and a nine-year-old who participate in the races, also pointed to the family-fun atmosphere as a great benefit to the sport.
“We’ve got brothers and sisters that come out here, friends and family come out to cheer as well,” Solberg said. “It’s definitely a family friendly sport. Cheering is half the fun.”
The BMX track is just north of Fergus Falls at the I-94 speedway.
