BIWABIK – The M State boys golf team finished off their regular season on a high note, shooting a team score of 316 to top Mesabi Range Community and Technical College by 12 strokes.

Brandon Sletmoen led the Spartans in the tournament, earning the medalist spot with a score of 73. Jared Cowden followed four strokes back with a 77. Mat Wagner contributed an 81 and Jordan Larson shot an 85. Mott Koster rounded out the team score with an 86.

In the individual competition, Rob Goff shot an 83. Austin Pulczinski and Chris Widme both recorded 86s and Brady Robertson finished with an 89.

“It was a beautiful day to play golf,” said Spartan head coach Jason Retzlaff. “Brandon and Jared were our anchors today and had very consistent rounds. Mesabi had a nice round and it would have been close if they could have posted a better fourth score.”

With the victory, the Spartans of won six of their seven regular season tournament. It is Sletmoen’s third medalist honor this year and the Spartans have held the medalist position in each event it has played.

“Overall it’s been a great regular season,” Retzlaff said. “I’m very proud of our team and what they have accomplished. We feel like we are prepared to play well at the Region Tournament next week. It will be a great experience to host it at Pebble Lake Golf Course. It’s unfortunate that Region rules allow only 5 players to compete as all nine of our guys deserve to be in there.”

The Spartans hope to carry its momentum into the Region XIII/MCAC Championship on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. M State will host the event this year at Pebble Lake Golf Course in Fergus Falls.

The golf team looks to capture it’s third straight MCAC/Region XIII title and earn another national tourney berth on their home course.

Tee times start at 10 a.m. on both days.
