Local family buys popular restaurantPublished 11:40am Thursday, September 26, 2013
A Fergus Falls family that has been in town for more than 60 years has purchased one of Otter Tail County’s most recognizable pieces of land.
Six members of the Welle family, along with a family friend, have purchased the five-bedroom house which used to be the restaurant The Pier.
For the family, it was a chance to stay connected to each other after the death of their mother two years ago, according to Bob Welle.
“The Welle family is very lucky to be able to have that beauty on that beautiful lake and be able to share it together,” Welle said.
The Pier opened in 1984 and was a popular restaurant in Otter Tail County for years. Its location on the lake helped make it a destination for local dining.
The building was purchased in 2004 and converted into a private home.
The family finalized the purchase June 1, and have put a lot of manual labor into it already, Welle said.
Although Welle said it was a shame no one wanted to convert the building back to a restaurant, the renovations would cost the family too much at this point.
What was formerly the the bar area of the restaurant is a family kitchen and the large restaurant kitchen has been removed as well.
