Thumbs up to Affinity [UPDATED]Published 10:16am Friday, September 27, 2013 Updated 12:19pm Friday, September 27, 2013
Last weekend’s “Plus it Forward” event, organized by Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union, was a good idea and a double-thumbs up goes to the people who came up with the idea.
The goal of the event was to raise money to bring back the fireworks display in Fergus Falls, which so many people lament the loss. Truly, the Fourth of July just isn’t the same without the colorful explosions celebrating our freedoms.
However, the fund raiser produced a number of residual effects, as well: more people will have food when they need it, dogs were exercises at the Humane Society, and one couple even took in a homeless man. Indeed, more than 100 acts of kindness were reported back to Affinity Plus, which said it would donate $10 for each.
Perhaps more important than the money raised for the celebration, is the lasting impact of these acts of kindnesses.
The folks at Affinity Plus wanted to create an event that would be more meaningful than just writing a check and to our way of thinking, they did that in a big way.
While the fireworks fund grew by $1,000, the people who gave the acts of kindness were the real heroes of the day.
Thank you to all of the individuals who gave of their time and talents, and thanks to Affinity Plus for being the leader in this community-wide sharing.
