Otter girls rain in goals against Pirates 7-0Published 10:40am Monday, September 30, 2013
CROOKSTON – The Fergus Falls girls soccer team traveled to Crookston Saturday to meet the Pirates for a rainy day of soccer. Though the weather was sour, the Otters’ offense wasn’t as it put in seven goals for a shutout victory.
The Otters started the scoring off early when Lauren Norgren took the ball down the field for a shot that stopped behind the Pirate goalie and was put in by Sherry Johnson.
Later in the first half, Millenna Habtemarium scored of a ball centered by Kathryn Sawtell. Just three minutes later Norgren scored with a shot off the far post. Sawtell increased the lead five minutes later and Brittany Kollman scored off a rebound after a corner kick. Sawtell added the final goal of the half to give the Otters a 6-0 lead at halftime.
Mahayla Serra scored the only goal of the second half with five minutes left in the game, giving the Otters the 7-0 victory.
Otter head coach Karoline Gustafson praised the Otters for their play in the big victory, especially with the different line up due to players on the road with the Otter marching band who played at the University of Minnesota Homecoming.
“Keanna Overland got to start today and she did a great job as an outside mid. Our backs did a nice job keeping the ball in our offensive half and our midfielders did a great job distributing to our forwards,” Gustafson said. “It was good to see us put some balls in the back of the net and to see our scoring spread around.”
The Otters improve to 4-8 with the victory. Fergus will be back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts the Brainerd Warriors.
