When they score, they score in bunches.
The Hillcrest Lutheran Academy/Pelican Rapids Comet boys soccer team earned their sixth shutout of the year Thursday night, capped off by another double digit scoring effort. The Comets ran past the St. John’s Prep Johnnies 12-0.
It only took 11 minutes for Comet senior Chris Pellegrino to rack up a hat trick, scoring in the second, fifth and eleventh minute. Chris Franco earned an assist after he placed a through ball to Pellegrino on the first score. Kevin Franco got the assist on the second and Eric Diaz on the third.
The scoring continued at the 24 minute mark when Gjermund Saevig found the back of the net off an assist by Chris Larsen. Four minutes later, Larsen took in a nifty pass from Sondra Harila and beat the Johnny keeper for a score of his own.
With nine minutes left in the half, Pellegrino was taken down in the box and Kevin Franco scored on the penalty kick. Before the Johnnies could catch their breath, Pellegrino stole the ball from a Johnny defender and crossed the ball over to Saevig for another score just 20 seconds later. Harila joined in on the scoring melee at 34 minutes, getting a goal off another Pellegrino assist for a 9-0 lead that the Comets carried into the second half.
Pellegrino would notch another score six minutes into the second half, giving him four goals in the game. Harila was credited with another assist.
Harila would tally another assist at the 53 minute mark with a pass to Caleb Mathison who scored from in front of the Johnny’s goal.
At the midway mark in the second half, Danny Franco booted a shot that was deflected and rebounded by Gunnar Saevig who put the ball away for the goal.
For the Comets’ final goal, Henrick Baugsto scored off a one-touch pass from Eduardo Urbano.
Leading the Comet defense that held the Johnnies in check all night was Edger Diaz and Quincy Undseth who played all eighty minutes and only allowed fives shots on goal. Keeper Abdul Ahmed picked up the shutout.
The Comets improve to 5-0-1 with the blowout. The talented Comet squad has not allowed a goal in its six games this season. It travels to East Grand Forks on Saturday for a 3 p.m. match up against the Green Wave.
