The Fergus Falls Area Youth Football Association’s seventh and eighth  grade football teams traveled to Breckenridge Tuesday night with high hopes. Both teams found success on the football field in their season opener.

The seventh grade team won the coin flip and elected to receive the ball to begin the game. A great opening drive ends with a long touchdown pass from quarterback Matthew Johnson to tight end Ashwin Stratton. On the following play, Robert Sewell made his way across the goal line to score the two point conversion.

The following defensive series for Fergus ended with a tough goal line stand including a sack by Brady Hill. The Breckenridge Cowboys later scored a touchdown nearing the end of the first quarter. The Cowboys tied the game 8-8 after a successful two point conversion.

In the second quarter, quarterback Matthew Johnson scrambled on a broken play for 20 yards into the end zone. Cole Knudson scored the two point conversion running around the right end. With a 16-8 Fergus lead, Robert Sewell scampered for an eight yard touchdown run. After a failed two point attempt, Fergus Falls lead at half time 22-8.

The second half saw more defense from both teams. On the defensive side of the ball, Kade Laney recovered a Cowboy fumble to give Fergus possession of the football around midfield. The Fergus offense continued to roll as quarterback Nathan Rund completed a long touchdown pass to wide receiver Austin Stanislawski for a second quarter touchdown. The following play, Nathan Rund kept the ball on a quarterback sneak for a successful two point conversion.

The second half was filled with great defensive performances from both teams. Logan Wentworth intercepted a deflected pass and recovered a fumbled in the third quarter. Fergus Falls’ Jack Jacobs had a fumble recovery of his own in the fourth quarter.
