Pioneers blast visiting Spartans 51-7 [UPDATED]

THIEF RIVER FALLS — The M State Spartan football team will have to go back to drawing board after a 51-7 loss Saturday to the Northland Pioneers.

From the opening bell, the Spartans were unable to get much going offensively. Northland took advantage of M State’s struggles as it put built a 28-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The Pioneers continued to control the visitor as it added 23 additional points before the Spartans got on the board.

M State was able to score its lone touchdown on a 20 yard hookup from quarterback Jesses Vanilau to wide receiver Travis Moen.

The Spartans finished the day with a total of 42 yards on offense, 75 yards in the air and -33 on the ground.

The Pioneers were able to post outstanding offensive numbers against the Spartan defense as it threw for 290 yards and had 206 yards rushing.

The Spartans will look to rebound Saturday as it hosts the Vermillion Ironmen in a 3 p.m. game.
