Spartans lead at home invite

Published 8:38am Monday, September 16, 2013

Playing on a rain dampened course, the M State Spartans were able to gain an early lead in its home tournament Sunday at Pebble Lake Golf Course.

The two-day tournament saw the Spartans come out fast and strong, shooting a 307. M State was followed by Rochester (327) and Mesabi Range (340) after day one.

“We had a nice day today,” Spartan coach Jason Retzlaff said. “Although we didn’t play great, everyone played pretty solid.  We didn’t play the par 5’s very well today and if we can take care of that we will have a chance to shoot a bit lower tomorrow.”

The Spartans’ Brandon Sletmoen shot the low for the day with a 71, while teammates Rob Goff and Brady Robertson each posted a 78. In non-team, M State individuals, Jordan Larson shot a 76 for the Spartans.

“It was great to see Jordan Larson have a nice round today.  He is a very talented player and it came out today,” Retzlaff said.

On the women’s side, Kari Larson of M State shot a 96, eight strokes off the leader Katie Johnson of Rochester.

The Spartans will continue the second day of the tournament Monday. The first group begins at 8 a.m.
