Unbeaten Comets clip Crusaders 4-0

ST. CLOUD – Despite facing their biggest challenge of the season, the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy/Pelican Rapids soccer team’s eight game shut out and undefeated streak continued Saturday against St. Cloud Cathedral. The Comets put together a convincing 4-0 victory on the road against the Crusaders.

It took almost the entire first half for the teams to light up the scoreboard. But with just 20 seconds left in the half, Kevin Franco found the net off a rebound from a Sonrda Harila shot that bounced off the Crusader keeper. The score was set up by an Eric Diaz corner kick.

Three minutes after the teams returned to the field, Harila increased the score to 2-0 with a goal. He would give an assist to Eduardo Urbano at the 62 minute mark, as the Comets took complete control of the game.

Chris Pellegrino added an insurance goal 12 minutes later with the assist being credited to Harila.

Hobbs Diaz played a near perfect game at the keeper position, stopping seven shots on goal by the attacking Crusader front.

Comet head coach Rod Jensen credited his defense with their effort keeping Cathedral scoreless.

“Danny Franco, Edgar Diaz, Chris Franco, and Quincy Undseth, played flawlessly against a very fast Cathedral attack,” Jensen said. “The Comet midfield, Kevin Franco, Sondra Harila, Eric Diaz, Eduardo Urbano, supported by Gunnar and Gjermond Saevig, got a tremendous workout against a very physical Crusader team.”

With the win, the Comets improve to a record of 8-0-1. It is only the fourth victory over the Crusaders for the Comets in its 13 years as a soccer team, the others coming in 2005 and 2006.

Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids will host Crookston in Pelican Rapids at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
