In search of its third straight national tournament, the M State Men’s golf team got off to a great start Monday afternoon as it built a 19-stroke lead at the MCAC/Region XIII golf championship held at the Pebble Lake Golf Course, the Spartans’ home course.

The Spartans shot a team score of 302, putting them in first in front of second-place holder Rochester (321) and Mesabi Range (331).

M State also holds the top three individual spots as Brandon

Sletmoen (71), Rob Goff (74) and Jared Cowden (75) have used the home course to their advantage.

“We played very well today and got off to a great start. To have three rounds at 75 or less puts our team in a great position,” Spartan coach Jason Retzlaff said. “Brandon, Rob, and Jared all played fantastic golf today. Our team has put itself in position to accopmlish our goal. We just need to stay patient and play well for one more day.”

Rounding out the team, Brady Robertson and Matt Wagner shot 82 and 84, respectively.

In the women’s tournament, M State’s Kari Larson shot a 99. Alex Lindholm of Bismarck State leads the women’s tourney with a score of 87.

The Spartans will be back on the links at 10 a.m. for the second day of the tournament Tuesday.
