Congrats Viking ElementaryPublished 2:45pm Thursday, October 3, 2013
Minnesota pulled 27 schools off the “failing” list in 2013, and we at The Daily Journal would like to congratulate Viking Elementary in Pelican Rapids for being among the schools to lose the failing label.
Viking Elementary faces challenges that most schools in the area don’t even have to think about. Pelican Rapids is home to families from all over the world, and many know very little English. When many children are learning to read and write, a lot of Viking Elementary students are still learning to understand English.
Before it was pulled from the failing list, Viking Elementary was considered a “focus school,” which means the primary concern wasn’t in overall academic achievement but in the gap between white and minority students.
The removal of Viking Elementary from the list of failing schools is a testament to fabulous teachers who understand and work through the barriers put up by language and cultural differences.
This is a big accomplishment for Pelican Rapids, and we applaud all who had a hand in helping Viking Elementary close the academic achievement gap.
