Fergus Falls youth football teams finish seasons undefeatedPublished 9:22am Wednesday, October 9, 2013
The Fergus Falls Area Youth Football Association seventh and eighth grade teams played their season finale at home Tuesday night. Under the lights on a gorgeous October night, both Fergus Falls teams attempted to stay unbeaten on the year against Pelican Rapids.
The seventh grade game started with a lot of scoring. In the first quarter, Pelican Rapids rushed into the end zone for the first score of the game. This was the first time all season the Fergus Falls seventh grade team was trailing in a game.
Fergus answered quickly though, with a three yard touchdown run by runningback Robert Sewell. The following defensive series for Fergus was only three plays, thanks much to a quarterback sack by defensive tackle Brady Hill.
On offense early in the second quarter, Fergus Falls’ runningback Jack Gerhardson rushed eight yards into the left side of the end zone. Quarterback Matthew Johnson dove into the end zone for a successful two point conversion.
Another solid defensive performance by Fergus Falls ended any hopes of a Pelican Rapids score. Matthew Johnson scampered 15 yards on a read-option play for Fergus Falls’ third touchdown of the half. Runningback Jayden Ollila scored the two point conversion for Fergus on a run up the middle. Fergus Falls lead 22-6 at halftime.
The Fergus defense continued to make plays as defensive end Cole Knudson recorded a sack. After regaining possession of the ball, Fergus quarterback Nic Pearson scored on a 25 yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. Runningback Andrew Johnson was successful rushing up the middle for the two point conversion. Fergus Falls leads 30-6. In the fourth quarter, Fergus Pearson completed a 25 yard touchdown pass to Andrew Johnson. Fergus Falls’ 7th grade team wins 36-6 and finishes their season with a 4-0 record.
The eighth grade team played ruthless defense. Sacks by five different defensive linemen, two forced turnovers, a defensive touchdown, technically sound solo tackles, and big hits all over the football field created problems for Pelican Rapids Tuesday night. The five defensive linemen that recorded one sack or more in the game were: Logan Wentworth, Max Wolfe, Kade Laney, Nathan Rund, and Zachary Abramson.
On the offensive side of the ball, Fergus Rund accepted a hand off and cruised by all defenders down the left sideline for a 60 yard touchdown run. Wentworth was successful on the two point conversion run.
Outstanding defensive play by both towns led to an 8-0 halftime score in favor of Fergus Falls. Cornerback Jared Kuehl intercepted a Pelican Rapids pass attempt and ran into the end zone for the first Fergus Falls score of the second half. Brad Moxness crossed the goal line to score the two point conversion. Fergus went up 16-0.
On their next possession, Fergus scored when Jack Jacobs sprinted 20 yards into the end zone. Nathan Zierden rushed to the right for the two point conversion. Nearing the end of the third quarter, Fergus Falls lead 24-0.
In the fourth quarter, cornerback Marshall King recovered a fumble setting Fergus Falls up with good field position. Several plays later, Fergus’ Jack Jacobs rushed to the right for a 5 yard touchdown run. Quarterback Jakob Brimhall completed a pass to Austin Stanislawski for a successful two point conversion. With less than 6 minutes left in the game, Brimhall crossed the goal line on a 15 yard dash up the middle.
Fergus Falls’ eighth grade team wins 38-0 and finishes their season with a 4-0 record.
