California Lundeen’s store wins ‘L.A. Weekly’ awardPublished 11:04am Thursday, October 10, 2013
In the case of the Lundeen family, the apple does not seem to have fallen far from the tree.
Lundeen’s, a Culver City, Cal. gift shop owned and operated by Kathryn Lundeen, was recently awarded the 2013 Best Gift Shop award by readers of L.A. Weekly.
“We didn’t even know we were nominated and one of our customers told us,” Lundeen said. “It was super exciting, it was great.”
Lundeen is the daughter of Fergus Falls’ Victor “Buzz” and Ann Lundeen, owners of Victor Lundeen Co., a shop that sells office products and books, among other things.
When she opened Lundeen’s in July 2008, Kathryn relied on her father’s expertise in helping her get the business set up. Her father joined her in California to look at the building and was there for much of the initial process.
As would be expected, Victor Lundeen was excited for his daughter to receive the award.
“I’m very proud of her for achieving this so quickly,” he said. “With so many gift stores in the L.A. area, it’s a real tribute to her.”
Lundeen’s offers a plethora of products, from candles to jewelry to stationery to baby clothes. Kathryn Lundeen said she plans on advertising the award both in the store and on the Lundeen’s website and is hopeful it could lead to more business in the future.
Now, almost 2,000 miles away and 17 years after she moved to California, Kathryn Lundeen is still reminded of home from time to time in her shop.
“We have a bunch of people from Fergus come into the store now,” she said. “Then they go back and tell my dad, ‘Oh, we went to her store!’”
The L.A. Weekly award may lead even more people to check out what they can find on Lundeen’s shelves.
