Center offers plenty of music, art this month [UPDATED]Published 9:43am Thursday, October 10, 2013 Updated 11:45am Thursday, October 10, 2013
Along with doing a lot of “Mom” bragging lately because my son, Mike, prevented two cars from colliding in the Service Food parking lot by swinging his grocery bag between the bumpers (thanks to him the only damage was to his container of sour cream), I’ve been playing Dala’s Youtube video of their song “Levi Blues.”
So, it’s no surprise I’m really excited about getting to see Dala on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. right here at the Fergus Theater because “Levi Blues” is my favorite song right now. Dala was nominated for a Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of our Grammy award) and won the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year. You may not have heard of them, but trust me, they are well known on the Canadian, American and International music circuit. Check them out at www.dalagirls.com or their videos at myspace.com/dalagirls (click on the Music tab. “Levi Blues” is song number 12 and has well over 20,000 hits). Tickets to this concert are still available.
The following Thursday, Oct. 17, we’ll have the audience seated right on stage with 12-string acoustic guitarist Neil Jacobs. This is another concert I’m looking forward to. You can check out Neil’s music at www.neiljacobs.com.
Our fall fund raiser, F.A.M.E. (Fund raiser and Annual Meeting Event) is on Saturday, Oct. 26, but the deadline to purchase tickets is Thursday, Oct. 17. That means you only have a week to get your tickets.
We have received a couple of really special items for our Silent Auction at FAME — a one-week stay for six at a villa in Italy; a one week stay for two at a resort in Mexico; a set of 1988 Olympic coins; two prints of paintings by French Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) that are signed by his grandson; a house concert with David Stoddard and Anthony Miltich; and a whole lot more. Some of the items are so cool, that we’ve added a Live Auction for a few of the “bigger” items. The whole evening is going to be a blast.
And speaking of incredible painters, the artwork of Nory McNelis is on display in our lobby gallery this month. We’re having an art reception for her on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. just before the Dala concert. You can meet Nory and talk with her about her amazing paintings, plus, the art reception is free and open the public.
It’s also possible we’ll be having something really fun and different on Halloween at 10 p.m. So get your best costume ready and check our Web site or Facebook pages.
