Fergus boys fall in playoffs to Lakers 3-0

DETROIT LAKES — The Fergus Falls boys soccer team set out to give the Detroit Lakes Lakers all it had in the opening round of the Section 8A tournament.

The Otters did just that, but the hosting Lakers were able to leave the field with a 3-0 victory, ending Fergus’ season.

Both teams battled back-in-forth in the first half with the scoreboard reflecting it as it was 0-0 at the break.

Detroit Lakes came out with increased intensity in the second half and scored three minutes in with a shot that just missed Fergus goalie Connor Hatfield’s hands.

Fergus attempted the soccer equivalent of pulling the goalie late in the game in hopes of tying it up. The plan backfired as the Lakers were able to notch two late goals to ice the game.

“We tried to get a goal at the end and take the game to overtime and it didn’t work out,” Otter coach Beau Krueger said. “If we wouldn’t have tried to get some offense going, the game would have ended 1-0. In an elimination playoff, losing 1-0 is the same as 3-0, so I stand behind our decision to go after the equalizing goal.”

The Otters finish its season 2-13 and will see six seniors leave the program.

“Our record this season is disappointing, but our numbers are holding and we are improving and moving forward. Coaching this team was a lot of fun, and I am proud of how positive they stayed the entire season,” Krueger said.
