Fergus girls blast Wolves 5-1 in playoffs [UPDATED]Published 9:57am Friday, October 11, 2013 Updated 10:05am Friday, October 11, 2013
After completing the season with a 4-10 record, the Fergus Falls girls soccer team played host to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley in the Section 8A tournament Thursday. The Otters were able to move on to the second round as it defeated the Wolves 5-1.
The Otter strated the game with a flurry as Lauren Norgren cleaned up a loose ball and put it in the back of the Wolves’ net. This followed with a goal by Kathryn Sawtell off a Abby Hobbs pass and second Sawtell goal off a Ashley Vaughn pass put the Otters up 3-0 in the first ten minutes of the game.
Sherry Johnson would add another goal before the break as she worked the ball upfield with Paige Kaseman before depositing it in the net. Walker would respond as the Fergus defense did not clear the ball and found an opening over goalie Sydney Kuehl’s hands.
Fergus would get its final goal with little time remaining in the first half as Brittany Kollman one-timed the ball past the Walker keeper.
“Overall, we did not play our best, top-notch game but we did score goals and saw how dominant our offense can be,” Otter coach Karoline Gustafson said.
The second half saw several opportunities for the Otter girls to continue to capitalize, but it was unable to notch another tally in the contest.
The Fergus Falls girls will now travel to take on the number one seed in the section tournament and Central Lakes Conference foe Alexandria in a 7 p.m. Saturday contest.
In two meetings this season, the Otters have fallen by a goal each time.
