Led by two goals from senior Chris Pellegrino, the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy/Pelican Rapids Comets walked off a muddy field victorious on Saturday afternoon with a Section 8A quarterfinal victory against the Alexandria Cardinals 4-1.

Pellegrino scored his first goal 20 minutes into the match off an assist from Sondra Harila

Fifteen minutes later, Eric Diaz found Pellegrino with a pass and the senior buried it for his second goal.

With the Comet defense holding the Cardinals in check, the Comets went into the half with a 2-0 lead.

It would pick up where it left off right away in the second half when Kevin Franco scored off a cross from Pellegrino.

The Comets added an insurance goal nine minutes later when Chris Larsen scored off a bobbled ball by the Cardinals’ goalie on the goal line and the Comets went up 4-0.

The Cardinals only goal of the game came from a header off a corner kick at 60 minutes.

Comet keeper Hobbs Diaz stopped nine shots on goal in the contest.

With the victory, the Comets advance to the semifinals of the Section 8A playoffs. Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids takes on St. Cloud Apollo, who defeated St. Cloud Cathedral 2-1 on Saturday, at 4 p.m. Tuesday at their home field in Fergus Falls.

The winner will meet either Sartell-St. Stephen or Bemidji on Thursday at St. Cloud State in the Section 8A Championship.
