Veterans mow grass for local National Guard [UPDATED]Published 11:13am Monday, October 14, 2013 Updated 11:15am Monday, October 14, 2013
Dave Anderson is no stranger to giving back to his county. On Friday afternoon, the Vietnam veteran gave just a little bit more.
Inspired by South Carolina resident Chris Cox, who garnered attention earlier this week by mowing the lawn at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. because of the federal government shutdown, Anderson looked for some way he could pitch in.
With help from a few friends and neighbors, most of them veterans, Anderson and his wife, Nona, took lawnmowers and trailers to the Armory in Fergus Falls. Since the National Guard is working with minimal staff at the site, the group decided to take care of the lawn.
“They do so much here that it doesn’t hurt to give back to them,” Dave said.
For Nona, the act was a simple gesture to thank the National Guardsmen for their service.
“With everything that the Guards have done for us, the least we could do is keep their lawn mowed,” she said.
