Fergus Falls area landowners who want to participate in the 11th annual Minnesota Governor’s Deer Hunt in Fergus Falls, Nov. 8-9, can do so by volunteering to be a hunter host.

Hunter hosts will help promote Minnesota’s deer hunting tradition and the Fergus Falls area by allowing visiting media and others to hunt their land.

“Fergus Falls is one of the state’s great hunting areas and the city itself is an outstanding tourist destination,” said Mark Johnson of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. “Hunters hosts help spread this word by allowing media to hunt their land or visit their deer camp for the purpose of producing positive deer hunting and tourism stories that are viewed or read throughout the state and Upper Midwest.”

Johnson said hunter hosts receive a complimentary ticket to the Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener Big Buck luncheon Friday, Nov. 8 at the West Otter Tail County Fairgrounds, where they will be formally recognized for their generosity.

Johnson said liability concerns are not an issue as under Minnesota law a property owner who gives permission for the use of their land for recreational purposes without charge does not assume responsibility or incur liability for any injury to the person or property caused by an act omission of the person.

To complete a hunter host application visit or contact the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association at 218-327-1103, Ext. 12.

Camps selected as hunter hosts receive a gift package provided courtesy of nongovernment event sponsors.

Gov. Mark Dayton, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner Tom Landwehr, Explore Minnesota Tourism Director John Edman and others will help celebrate the state’s deer hunting tradition at a Big Buck luncheon Friday, Nov. 8 at the West Otter Tail County Fairgrounds.

Tickets are $15 and are available by contacting MDHA at 800-450-DEER, Ext. 12, online at or locally at the Fergus Falls Chamber of Commerce (202 S Court St.).

The Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener is a partnership among the DNR, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, Explore Minnesota Tourism and the Fergus Falls community to promote hunting and tourism.
