Underwood goes black [UPDATED]

Otter Tail Power Company has a planned power outage set for Friday morning in Underwood and some surrounding areas that a company official estimated would effect 206 customers.

The outage is scheduled to last from 8 to 11 a.m., but that is an approximate window and it could be shorter or longer depending on what crews find during their work, according to customer service manager Mike Van Voorhis.

But the company builds in some cushion to their projected times during planned outages and Van Voorhis said 99 percent of the time power is restored quicker than the estimated time.

“Unless we are really off on our estimates, we should not be going over the 11 a.m. timeframe,” Van Voorhis said.

Otter Tail Power needs to replace a transformer in a substation in Underwood. The city of Underwood will be effected, as will customers located north along Highway 35 to the East and West of Norway Lake.

The company made contact with effected businesses earlier this week and also sent out information on the outage to effected homes. These methods, along with advertisements in local media, are what the company uses to alert people to planned outages ahead of time, Van Voorhis said.

“It’s a very high priority for us to inform our customers of any inconvenience,” he said.
