Business-friendly state creates jobs, prosperity [UPDATED]

The Tax Foundation, a Washington, D.C., think tank, recently released its 2014 State Business climate index.  Minnesota ranked a dismal 47th or fourth from the bottom on the index.

Earlier in 2013, Forbes ranked Minnesota eighth as the Best State for Business, but as the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce was quick to point out, that was before the Democrats took control in 2013 and enacted unfriendly business taxes.

The new DFL controlled legislature has enacted new warehousing taxes and other unfriendly and harmful business taxes in the 2013 session.  I believe this will entice business to look at our neighboring states for relocation. North Dakota ranked 28th and South Dakota coming in as 2nd, in that index. Thus we see billboards saying “NORTH DAKOTA- OPEN FOR BUSINESS” on our freeways. Also, South Dakota has no corporate or individual income taxes.

While I realize that taxes are a fact of life, how life style controlling should they be? I enjoy the high quality of life we have in Minnesota, but also realize a strong tax friendly, business friendly environment means increased jobs and prosperity along with a healthy economy.

I, along with my legislative peers need to respond to these increasing taxes with a more conservative approach.  I pledge to do just that. Let’s get Minnesota back to being a friendly place to do business.
