Fergus bowlers close out home season with two wins

Published 10:16am Monday, October 14, 2013

The Fergus Falls High School bowlers hosted their second meet of the season on Sunday, with the three teams taking seven out of the nine matches on the day. The varsity squad will take their 14-3 record, and two win lead, into the final regular season meet at Detroit Lakes in two weeks. The regular season conference championship, and also the top seed in the conference tournament, will be on the line.

The Fergus varsity bowled the BYE in round one, and came away with a 5-0 win. Zack Anderson had a clean 100 percent fill match, with Dylan Huffman at 83 percent, and Casey Thom with 75 percent. Match two, against second-place Wadena, was a 2-3 loss in a very low scoring match. Both teams were struggling to fill frames, but Wadena was able to squeak out the first three games for the win. Hunter Christenson led the Otters with 66 percent. The final varsity match of the day was a much-needed 4-1 win over Perham. Arnold Bolland and Olivia Anderson were team-high at 75 percent.

The Fergus Falls JV1 team also began the day against the BYE, and racked up a 5-0 win. Hunter Norman set the pace with an 87 percent match, with Jacob Halvorson at 62 percent. Wadena JV was the second opponent of the meet, and after trading wins for the first four games, it came down to the tenth frame of the last game. Casey Thom converted a spare, and finished it off with a strike to take the game by three pins, earning the 3-2 match victory. Thom was team-high at 90 percent. The third match for JV1 was a 4-1 win over Fergus JV2, with Allison Krensing firing at 75 percent, and Kylie Jennen, Thom, and Norman finishing at 62 percent. Fergus JV1 will go into the regular season finale just one win behind leader Detroit Lakes JV. The two teams will meet in the season’s final match.

The Fergus Falls JV2 team started their day out with a nice 3-2 win over Wadena JV. Luke Newkirk and Nolan Booth led the way with 66 percent. JV2 added another match win with a 4-1 decision over New York Mills JV. John Runningen was team-high at 75 percent, with Levi Danielson second at 66 percent. In their third match, a 1-4 loss to Fergus JV1, Runningen again was team-high, filling at 83 percent.

The final regular season meet of the year will be in Detroit Lakes on Saturday with competition beginning at 1 p.m.
