Rockets finish fifth at home tournament

UNDERWOOD — The Underwood volleyball team was able to take fifth place finish in its home meet Thursday.

The Rockets opened up pool play against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley. The Wolverines were able to sweep the Underwood in two sets 25-14, 25-22. Underwood would rebound with a 25-22, 25-18 win over Buffalo Lake-Hector to close out pool play with a 1-1 record.

Underwood would take on the Tigers in the opening round of tournament play, but its Little Eight Conference rival would hand them a tough 25-23, 28-26 loss. The Rockets were able to right its sails as it defeated Kerhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 27-25, 25-21 to claim fifth.

“We got a chance to play eight solid sets during the tournament,” Rocket coach Diane Ross said. “It’s the time of year where everyone is playing hard preparing for post season play, so its a good day of competition.  Obviously there were times where we needed to compete harder, but overall I thought we did a lot of good things throughout the day.”

Kaitlyn Holen led the team with 19 kills and 13 digs, while Kenzie Woodman led the serving with seven aces in the tournament.

The Rockets finish its regular season with a 14-14 record and will wait for its seed in Section 6A playoffs.
