Fergus Falls bowlers win conference, off to statePublished 11:46am Tuesday, November 5, 2013
The Fergus Falls Varsity and JV1 teams will be representing the West Central (North) Conference at the MHSB State Tournaments in December, after victories in the conference tournament held in Wadena Sunday.
In the first varsity semi-final match, the number one seeded Otter squad squared off against five seed New York Mills. New York Mills had defeated Perham (4) in a play-in match to fill out the four-team, single-elimination bracket.
The format would be five-game matches, with the first team to get three wins earning the victory. The Otters wasted no time in dispatching New York Mills by taking the first three games, earning a spot in the championship match.
Zack Anderson, Mary Gettel, and Hunter Christenson were all clean 100% percent for the match, with Wyatt Swanson and Dylan Huffman in at 75 percent.
In the other semi-final contest, Wadena(3) defeated Detroit Lakes(2). Wadena, bowling on their home lanes, came into the final match with some momentum, but the Otters would have none of it, and came out of the chute with a strong 212 game to take game one.
Game two was more of the same, with Fergus Falls rolling up a 20 pin victory.
Game three was close right up to the end, when Christenson crushed the first two strikes in the tenth frame to lock it away, and send the Otters to their fourth trip to the State Tournament in the five years of the program.
Anderson was clean 100 percent again in the win, with Christenson at 85 percent, and Gettel, Swanson, Huffman and Arnold Bolland finishing at 75 percent.
In JV action, number two seed Fergus Falls JV1 began the day by scoring a 3-0 win over the young Otter JV2 team. Kylie Jennen and Dan Anderson were perfect 100 percent in the match, with Hunter Norman at 83 percent. In the other half the bracket, Wadena JV(4) defeated New York Mills JV(5) in their play-in match, and went up against number one seed, Detroit Lakes JV. The regular season wins and losses didn’t mean a thing to Wadena, as just like the varsity teams, Wadena (9-11) would take down Detroit Lakes (19-1) and earn a spot in the finals.
In the championship match, it would be Wadena getting the jump on Fergus Falls, taking the first game by eight pins. JV1 would come right back and take game two, but then dropped game three as Wadena put up their second highest game of the year at 178. Down 1-2, and facing elimination, the Otters roared back with 181-126 and 182-109 wins to earn the JV Championship.
Casey Thom and Ryan Wilson were team-high for the match at 75 percent, Norman was at 70 percent, Jacob Halvorson had 66 percent, and Allison Krensing and Anderson finished at 62 percent. This is Fergus Falls’ fourth year of JV competition, and it will be the second trip to the State JV Tournament.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the All-Conference team was announced, with Fergus Falls claiming five of the top eight bowlers in the conference. Olivia Anderson, Arnold Bolland, Mary Gettel, Hunter Christenson, and Wyatt Swanson will represent West Central (North) at the All-Conference tournament at Mattie’s in South St Paul, on Saturday, November 30.
The MHSB Varsity State Tournament will be held at Flaherty’s in Arden Hills on Saturday, Dec. 7, and the MHSB JV State Tournament will be at Midway Pro Bowl in St Paul on Sunday, Dec. 8.
