M.A. Burris has new charge in ArizonaPublished 11:42am Tuesday, November 12, 2013
One of the men accused of killing his relative last year now faces a new charge in Maricopa County in Mesa, Ariz.
Michael Alan Burris, 65, faces a new charge of conspiracy to commit murder in Maricopa County. He’s remained in the Maricopa County Jail since he was arrested Aug. 12 in Mesa, Ariz. for the murder of Scott Burris, who died from a single gunshot wound last year.
Michael Alan Burris and his son, Michael Kyle Burris, 23, both formerly of Fergus Falls, are charged in Otter Tail County with felony second-degree murder. Michael Alan Burris was fighting extradition. Friday, Nov. 8 was the deadline to complete the necessary paperwork to return him to Minnesota, following the process of a governor’s warrant.
This new charge in Maricopa County makes it uncertain as to when Michael Alan Burris would return to Minnesota, according to Assistant Otter Tail County Attorney Michelle Eldien. It’s something she’s working on with officials in Maricopa County.
“It’s delaying things probably a little bit,” Eldien said. “It does change things. I think we’ll know more by Friday.”
The next court appearance for Michael Alan Burris is scheduled for Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court.
Michael Kyle Burris waived extradition and remains in the Otter Tail County Jail on $1 million bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 30.
According to the criminal complaints, an inmate in the Otter Tail County Jail told authorities that around March 2012 Michael Kyle Burris said he and his dad killed his cousin because of a drug debt in which Scott Burris reportedly owed his uncle about $20,000. The tip led to the charges and arrests of the suspects.
