Education week celebrates work [UPDATED]Published 10:32am Thursday, November 21, 2013 Updated 12:34pm Thursday, November 21, 2013
American Education Week presents all Americans with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education.
Locally, the Fergus Falls Education Association and the Fergus Falls Public Schools honored the Teacher of the Year and Support Staff of the Year at an awards ceremony held on Wednesday, November 13.
Teacher of the Year is Jacobson
Congratulations to this year’s teacher nominations – Kathy Bjork, kindergarten; Everett Jacobson, elementary music; Diane Marvel, special education; Diane Prischmann, language arts; and Paul Talley, industrial technology.
The Fergus Falls Education Association selected Everett Jacobson as this year’s winner. The following information was taken from Mr. Jacobson’s Teacher of Year form:
Mr. Jacobson’s desire is for students to learn about music in a way that is fun and to have lots of ‘hands on’ experiences.
He believes singing is the basis for all music making and understanding, and students at the elementary level should do a lot of it.
Children can learn much about their culture from being offered a wide variety of songs and musical experiences.
Students should sing good quality songs, play on good quality instruments and have high quality learning experiences.
A strong music program augments the climate of the school and the academic growth of students.
Mr. Jacobson grew up on a farm (a good educational background in itself) and graduated in 1973 from Madelia High School in southern Minnesota.
He earned a Bachelor of Public School Music Degree from Concordia Moorhead in 1977, and a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction from the University of St. Thomas in 1995.
Mr. Jacobson teaches music at the Adams Elementary School, serves as a co-lead negotiator for the Fergus Falls Education Association and sings with the Fergus Falls Community Chorale.
Congratulations to Everett Jacobson on this outstanding honor!
Support Staff of the Year
The Support Staff of the Year nominees for the Fergus Falls Public Schools included: Collette Cox, Vicki Crowser, Amy Duenow, Jackie Formo, Laura Heidebrink, Holly Froemming, Marie Fuchs, Diane Jensen, Lori Jensen, Rhonda Maack, Amy Newkirk, Kaele Rogers, Jane Schierer, and Deb Werre.
Each of these staff members have demonstrated outstanding work in many areas throughout our School District.
They have high expectations for behavior and learning and work hard to establish a great rapport with parents, students and teachers.
Congratulations to Jane Schierer, our High School secretary, for being selected as this year’s winner. Her nominator made the following comments.
“Jane Schierer is the definition of ‘Going above and beyond’ the call of duty.
She consistently puts the needs of others in the forefront and would sacrifice anything she had if she felt it would help someone else out.
From serving students and parents, teachers, and custodians, counselors, and administrators — she is the front line in front of the front line.
Jane will look for subs at the last minute, will donate her last dollar to someone in need, and will give chocolate to anyone who looks like they might need a little extra boost.
She is the ultimate workhorse and she has a work ethic that is more than noteworthy. She does it all, all the time … she never complains, or asks why? She does more than required and does it with pride.
The long and short of it is that Jane cares about people … all people.
She takes care of those who need caring for and she does so in so many ways that those of us who get to work with her are certainly blessed by her dedication to our school as well as her kind and caring nature.”
Again congratulations to those honored during last week’s ceremony. It’s a privilege to publicly recognize the hard work and dedication of our staff members.
