Limit should be reduced [UPDATED]Published 4:03am Monday, November 25, 2013 Updated 6:08am Monday, November 25, 2013
It seems appropriate that the Minnesota Department of Transportation do a speed zone study along County Road 1 on the northeast side of Fergus Falls.
It also seems clear that, for several reasons, the speed limit on that highway should be reduced from 50 miles per hour.
On the stretch of two miles County Road 1 where the speed limit is 50 miles per hour, traffic is heavy.
The stretch also is within city limits or the populated areas of Aurdal Township, containing residential areas, commercial businesses and a popular bike and running trail.
Common sense would suggest the stretch have a speed limit closer to the 30 mph range that most city streets have, rather than the 55 mph limit on rural highways.
There are countless statistics that show speed is a key factor in both preventing accidents and reducing the severity of them.
A lower speed limit on County Road 1 might be inconvenient for some drivers. But if it makes the road safer, then the limit should be reduced.
