Daniel Nersten’s 30-point performance opened up the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy Comets’ home season with a 64-51 victory over the West Central Area Knights.
An intense opening minutes set the stage for a battle between the two schools, who are used to tough competition in their respective conferences.
Nersten faced off against Knights guard Dakotah Kashmark, setting the intense tone for the evening. While the two went back and forth, Nersten led the Comets as they pulled away in the second half.
“It’s fun to see two competitors and really great players go head to head,” Comet head coach Gregg Preston said after the game. “It’s a pleasure to see both these guys play with how hard they work.”
Kashmark ended the night with 16 points, four assists and two steals. Nersten also had six rebounds and six assists.
The Comets dominated the boards on the evening, leading 42-22 with 17 offensive grabs.
“Hillcrest dominated us and outplayed us in every aspect of the game. It was very disheartening to get out hustled and out rebounded that bad as those two things are usually strengths of ours,” said Knights head coach Kraig Hunter.
Comet Jake Isaac finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double.
Jay Zimmerman matched Kashman’s 16 points for the Knights.
