No rust for youthful OttersPublished 9:51am Wednesday, November 27, 2013
BRECKENRIDGE — The Fergus Falls boys may have lost valuable leadership from last year’s team, but in its opener, youth was the story as the Otters defeated the hosting Breckenridge Cowboys 79-54.
“Coming into the season we were searching for our identity,” Otters coach Dave Rund said. “Tonight, I believe we took a giant step forward in finding that identity as we moved the ball well and had a nice mixture of inside and outside play.”
Austin Rund and Matt Monke led the Otters with 16 points apiece, while Isaiah Lemke recorded a double-double scoring 10 points and dishing out 11 assists.
Monke and Lemke were just one of many young players to make their mark in the opener as the Otters trotted out a very youthful team. The Otters didn’t let the lack of varsity experience hinder them as the team looked sharp in its first game.
“It all starts with basketball I.Q. and attitude,” Rund said of the great play of his young players. “These guys just have a passion for the game and they are constantly working to get better.”
The Otters will open its home season Saturday as it hosts the Hawley Nuggets at 7:30 p.m.
