Pelican Valley maintains tax-exempt statusPublished 11:57am Friday, December 6, 2013
Pelican Valley Health Center maintained its tax exempt status after the Otter Tail County Assessor’s Office decided to not to tax its assisted living operations, according to a report in the Pelican Rapids Press.
The Hospital District board learned earlier this year the Assessor’s office was considering making these assisted living facilities taxable.
Such a move could have increased the Hospital District’s taxes by as much as $70,000 per year.
The Assessor’s office was considering the move because of higher rents in assisted living residences compared to nursing homes and because of their comparisons to commercial apartment complexes.
The Hospital District was able to successfully argue that its assisted living facilities are an extension of their nursing home facilities, which have always maintained tax-exempt status.
