Cardinals fly past OttersPublished 10:04am Wednesday, December 11, 2013
An ongoing theme for the Fergus Falls boys basketball team this season will be youth and consistency. On Tuesday night, the Otters saw a very seasoned Alexandria Cardinals team walkout of Kennedy Secondary Gold Gym with a 78-64 Central Lakes Conference victory.
The Cardinals were able to jump out to an early lead scoring the first seven points of the game. Fergus was able to rally back before the end of the half as they trailed 37-36 at the break.
The Otters experienced deja vu as Alexandria opened up the second half scoring the first six points. In this case for Fergus, their would be no rally as the Cardinals finished with a 14 point victory and remained unbeaten in conference play.
“I thought we played sluggish at the beginning of both halves,” Otter coach Dave Rund said. “They are a very seasoned team and it showed. I am proud of how our younger guys kept battling till the final bell rang.”
John Vogeler led the Cardinals dropping in 20
points, while teammates Joe Gorghuber (15), Brandon Bistodeau (13), David Krivanek (12) and Chase Kohler (10) were all in double figures in the win.
Austin Rund was seemed to be the only offensive weapon for the Otters as he was the lone scorer in double figures as he finished with 36 points and yanked down 14 rebounds.
“The Cardinals had five players in double figures. We need to have at least two different players get in double digits,” Rund said.
The Otters will continue it tough early season schedule as it hosts another top CLC team in the St. Cloud Tech Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“This is a tough stretch of games for us, but what a great learning experience for our younger players. They have such a high ceiling for improvement and we are excited to get back to practice and work on the little things,” Rund said.
