Storm’s third period flurry dooms Otter boys in 5-2 lossPublished 10:47am Friday, December 13, 2013
The Otters could not weather the storm Thursday night as Sauk Rapids-Rice rained in three third period goals to claim a 5-2 Central Lakes Conference victory.
The Storm started the first period with goals by Brandon Mixell and Wyatt Orth. The Otters would respond before the end of the period as Peter Johnson took a Jack Nathe pass and deposited the puck into the net.
The second period saw both teams struggle to find its offensive mojo from the first period as the teams skated to a stalemate before the second intermission.
The floodgates opened in the third period as Sauk Rapids went back-to-back-to-back goals. Ryan Rutar, Travis Kothenbeutel and Cole VanHalbeck ran the score up to 5-1. Mitch Cole would add the lone Fergus goal in the third period.
“Things just didn’t click tonight,” Otters coach Mark Donaghue. “It seemed like every pass we made was just a little off and things like that. We’ve got to work a bit to get after that and take advantage of opportunities.”
Fergus netminder Andrew MacFarlane turned away 28 shots in the game.
The Otters will look to reign in its recent slump as it hosts the winless Breckenridge/Wahpeton Blades at 1 p.m. Saturday.
