SARTELL — The Fergus Falls boys hockey team was able to rally late and saw Adam Evenson knock in a power play goal in overtime to give the Otters 5-4 victory over the hosting Sabres Tuesday.
The Sabres opened the game with a goal at the 1;37 mark, but the Otters would quickly respond as Kyler Peterson sounded the buzzer off a Peter Johnson pass. Sartell would finish the period with a goal by Aaron Randall to hold a 2-1 lead entering the first intermission.
In the second period, Johnson would light the lamp to tie the game at two goals a piece. The Sabres would regain the lead with a goal by Kyle Erickson, but Fergus was again there as Peterson punched in his second goal of the evening.
Sartell would once again grab the lead with a goal by Pencer Zwiener in the third period, but Peterson, completing his hat trick, would notch the game at 4-4 to send it into overtime.
The Otters would finally get a goal before the Sabres as Evenson flipped in the game winner.
“This was a good effort by our guys tonight,” Otter head coach Mike Donaghue said. “We’re still short handed, but this was probably our best effort of the year so far.”
Fergus goalie Andrew MacFarlane turned away 25 shots out of 29, while the Otters placed 25 of its own on the Sabre net.
“Our guys are showing up and battling,” Donaghue added. “It will be exciting to see them plan when we’ve got everyone back.”
The Otters will be back in action Thursday as it hosts the Brainerd Warriors at 7:15 p.m.
