A big ‘Thank you’ from Underwood School [UPDATED]

Published 10:47am Friday, December 13, 2013 Updated 1:10pm Friday, December 13, 2013

It is no secret that Underwood Football had an outstanding season. It was a picture perfect Cinderella story in which a team performed far beyond expectations to seize a second place finish in state nine man football.

As I reflect on this season, there are a few groups that need to be thanked.

First and foremost, I would like to thank our incredibly supportive community.

Our community came alive in support of our team with local businesses plastering slogans, signs, and well wishes for the team on their windows.

Community members adorned school colors and purchased window paint to the point that all things orange became scarce.

As if that was not enough, our community came out in droves to support our boys throughout the season and at the Metrodome. Underwood fans literally packed buses to watch our team play and turned the Metrodome into a sea of orange and black.

I am thankful and proud to be a part of such a supportive community. Thank you to all of you for your great support of our school.

I would also like to thank our athletes. We have some great student athletes. I cannot tell you how proud I am of both these students on and off the field.

I was so proud to witness on numerous occasions our players helping opposing players up after a play, cheering on their teammates from the sidelines, and embodying good sportsmanship.

The Underwood Football Team was also awarded the prestigious Minnesota High School League Gold Academic Team Award, which is reserves for the top academic teams in the state. Student athletes, thank you for your dedication to academic excellence as well as exhibiting great character.

Our music program did an absolutely amazing job supporting our teams. I was very proud to see our school so well represented.

You demonstrated musical excellence in your support of our team. Music boosters, directors, and students thank you for making Underwood proud!

I would like to highlight our coaching staff for their incredible work in preparing our students for this level of competition.

We all know that advancing to a state championship game does not happen accidently; it is a result of hard work and dedication.

Thank you to the coaching staff for providing this unique opportunity to our student athletes. Let’s do this again next year!

I would also like to thank the rest of the student body and staff for the school spirit that you demonstrated throughout this wonderful journey.

I am so proud of the school spirit that our staff and students demonstrated throughout this season. This sense of school spirit made for such a great and fun atmosphere.

There are some groups that have worked behind the scenes providing support.

I would like to highlight the music boosters, sports boosters, quarterback club, individuals, and parents for your strong support of our team.

You supported our students with donations towards transportation for both the team and band.

We had donations of food, snacks, and drinks for the team. We had groups providing logistical support for ordering of rocket apparel. Time and time again we had individuals step up to help out. Thank you for this level of support, it was absolutely amazing!

Lastly, I would like to thank all of our friends from the surrounding towns for your excellent support of the Underwood Rockets.

You truly demonstrated what it means to be good neighbors. I cannot tell you what it means to Underwood to feel support from neighboring towns. Thank you!

Jeremiah Olson is the superintendent of the Underwood School.
