Otters struggle to dodge Sabres in 50-22 loss

The Fergus Falls wrestling team is still looking for its first dual win as the visiting Sartell-St. Stephen Sabres claimed a 50-22 victory over the Otters Tuesday.

The Otters had been making strides in recent weeks, but could not get over the hump against its tough Central Lakes Conference opponents. The Sabres changed all that as they recorded a lopsided conference victory.

“I was proud of the team effort tonight,” Otters coach Adam Schlepp said. “Sartell has a tough team this year, we showed up and wrestled to the best of our ability, we just came up short. I do appreciate the effort the Otters brought to the mat tonight.”

Fergus fell in the first three lower weight classes, giving the Sabres a lead, before Nathan Onstad claimed a 3-1 decision over Sam Kraul in the 126 lbs. weight class.

The Sabres continued to control the meet as the team recorded four pins and two major decision wins.

The Otters had four other winners as Ben Schindler (138 lbs.) defeated Connor Dols 5-2, Dan Rinquist (160 lbs.) won by 11-1 major decision over Caleb O’Brien and Gus Makovsky (182 lbs.) and Abram Aho (195 lbs.) each won their matches by pinfall.

The win gave Sartell its only dual win in the conference and its third overall this season.

The Otter wrestlers will now prepare for Friday’s Big Bear Invitational in Blackduck as the two-day tournament pits 35 teams against one another.

Last season, Fergus Falls finished in tenth at the invite and saw two wrestlers take first at the event.
