Otters win wild double OT game versus SpudsPublished 10:28am Wednesday, January 15, 2014
In a game that pitted classic rivals against each other, questionable calls, crazy up-and-down atmosphere and two overtimes saw the hosting Fergus Falls boys basketball team walk away with a 87-86 victory over the Moorhead Spuds Thursday.
“We had zero energy in the first half and Moorhead didn’t play with much more than us,” Otters’ coach Dave Rund said. “But in the second half, we started moving without the ball on offense and were able to get back into the game.”
The Spuds looked to continue its dominance from the teams first meeting as it left the court at the break with a 34-26 lead.
The Otters turned the dial up to 11 in the second half as it rallied back to get within three. With under 10 second left to play in regulation, Jake Western pulled up from wing to tie the game 71-71 with six seconds left. Moorhead missed its chance to go ahead, sending the game to overtime.
Fergus would enter the extra period without leading scorer Austin Rund as the senior fouled out with a minute to play in regulation.
With several young players on the court, the Otters were able to keep the game in a stalemate after the teams traded buckets for a 79-79 tie. The Spuds did have a chace to seal the game as a reach-in foul was called that sent Spuds’ star guard Cody Dorow to the charity stripe with Moorhead down by one. Dorow would make only one-of-two shots.
In the second overtime, Dorow looked to play hero for the Spuds, but Otter point guard Isaiah Lemke stepped up and helped finish the game as Fergus claimed the single point decision.
“I told the boys to keep their calm and composure,” Rund said going into the overtime. “Lemke was a difference maker for us in those minutes. He really grew up tonight.”
Lemke finished the game with 23 points, while Austin Rund, who sat out both overtimes, led the team with 26 points.
Dorow finished the night with 43 tallies, scoring all of Moorhead’s points in the overtime periods.
The Otters also completed a sweep as both the JV and ninth-grade teams recorded victories over Moorhead.
The Otters will get another test Thursday as it travels to take on Section 8AAA leader Sartell at 7:30 p.m.
“We continue to climb in the section standings, but Sartell is the measuring stick to how far we have come in 13 games,” Rund said.
