Otters host ‘Pudge’ Anderson tourney [UPDATED]Published 10:29am Monday, January 27, 2014 Updated 10:33am Monday, January 27, 2014
The Fergus Falls wrestling team found out where they stood midway through the season as it hosted the Isaiah “Pudge” Anderson Memorial Wrestling Tournament Saturday.
“We had the best teams from Minnesota and North Dakota wrestling in our gym, it was a great atmosphere,” Otters’ coach Adam Schlepp said. “We wrestled with some of the best competition in Minnesota, and we wrestled well today. It was nice to see the team rise to the occasion.”
The Otters opened up the tournament on a good note as it defeated Central Lakes Conference opponent Sauk Rapids-Rice 36-25.
The Storm looked to have the dual in the bag after starting with five wins in the lower weight classes, but Fergus was able to turn it around in the middle weights and saw big wins by Abram Aho (195 lbs.) and Taylor Tenner (285 lbs.) to put them over the top.
The Otters next opponent was No. 1 (Class AAA) and second ranked team in the nation, Apple Valley. The Eagles proved why it is ranked the best team in Minnesota as it swept the Otters with a 76-0 victory.
The Otters would look to rebound in the consolation bracket against Wahpeton, but could not overcome an early deficit, falling 40-31.
Dane Ringquist (160 lbs.) had a great match against Kyle Bjugstad as he took home a 13-6 decision. Teammates Gus Makovsky (182 lbs.) and Aho each picked up pins in the dual.
The Eagles claimed the tournament crown and lost only two matches in three duals.
“Apple Valley is currently ranked No. 2 in the country and they showed up ready to wrestle. They never lost more than one match in any dual today. That is a huge statement considering they wrestled the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams in ND today,” Schlepp said.
The Otters will return to dual action Thursday as it welcomes in CLC foe Rocori for a 6:15 p.m. showdown.
