Former Otter Walvatne defends against Super Bowl receiver

Published 11:50am Friday, January 31, 2014

Most of us get a brush with greatness once in life. Whether its catching a glimpse of a celebrity at an airport, going backstage to meet a musician or getting a piece of memorabilia signed by a favorite athlete.

After Sunday, Fergus Falls alum Luke Walvatne can say he went against a Super Bowl-caliber wide receiver and saw a star in the making.

In 2004, Walvatne was asked to cover Rocori standout, Eric Decker, in the Otters showdown against the Spartans.

It was a hard-fought game with the teams knotted at 13 after the first half.

Rocori would pull away with two third-quarter touchdowns, one to Decker, in the 29-13 win.

Walvatne and the Otter defense did their best to stop the Spartans and Decker, but the future Minnesota Gopher would finish the game with three catches for 106 yards and a score.

Asked what we he remembers about the game, Walvatne laughed and said that they lost.

“Other than that, I remember trying to defend him and just seeing how incredibly superior he was to everyone on the field.”

Although Walvatne praised the Denver receiver’s ability, he said that he was very arrogant and some of his actions toward the Otter sideline were a little less than appropriate.

“He knew he was good and let everyone know it. He said a few words to me that I can’t repeat,” Walvatne said.

Walvatne doesn’t hold any hard feelings toward the receiver as he even favors Decker’s Broncos over the Seattle Seahawks.

“I think the game really depends on the weather, because if conditions are right, Denver could run away with it.,” Walvantne said. “But I do think the game is going to be lower scoring, somewhere in the range of 21-14 Denver,” Walvatne said.

Super Bowl XLVIII will kick off at 5:30 p.m. at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The game will be broadcast on the FOX network.
