Iverson deserves honors

Published 8:23am Monday, January 27, 2014

Jim Iverson may not have wanted the credit for the success of the Fergus Falls High School band program over his tenure as director.

But he certainly deserves the recognition, shown Thursday in the form of the original piece “Arrows,” written by Sam Hazo.

As director, Iverson elevated the Fergus Falls High School band program to one of the best in the region, with the marching band receiving national recognition and performing in the Presidential Inauguration.

Countless students have benefited from his teaching and his leadership.

Learning to play an instrument, playing as a group and performing in public are all skills that band members have taken with them as they lead productive lives.

It’s good to see that, in a world where celebrities get the lion’s share of attention, it’s a good thing that a person like Iverson, who bettered the lives of so many students, gets recognized.
