Quality Toyota Sports Spotlight: Halbakken: Big Blue’s big man

Published 10:08am Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Luke Halbakken brought his size and physicality from the Pelican Rapids high school basketball team to M State in Fergus Falls. Halbekken leads the Spartans with the same physical style of play in the paint that made him a standout for the Vikings.

I sat down and talked with Halbakken about his experience at M State and his life outside of the world of collegiate athletics.

Q: What subjects do you like in college?

A: I like math, sciences are fun, but public speaking I don’t like (laughs).

Q: Do you know what you would like to study after you leave M State?

A: Agriculture.

Q: Where would you like to go?

A: I’ve been thinking about NDSU, but it kind of depends on scholarships for basketball and stuff.

Q: What are some of your hobbies?

A: Just hanging out with the guys. We have a lot of movies we watch in our apartment. Shooting hoops and going to Applebees.

Q: What’s the last movie you saw?

A: Year One

Q: What do you like most about college basketball?

A: Getting to know new guys and a new style of play.

Q: What are three words you think your teammates would use to describe you?

A: The big man.

Q: What would you do with a million dollars?

A: I would get my parents a house and make sure they had some money to retire. I would probably put a bunch of it in savings, but spend a little and get through college.

Q: What sports teams do you follow?

A: The Patriots and the Knicks.

Q: What is your favorite sport to watch?

A: I love watching football.

Q: Who is your favorite football player?

A: Got to go with Tom Brady.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re away from school?

A: When I go home I like to hunt and ice fish. Just outdoor things in general, like going to the lake, wake boarding and skiing.

Q: What’s you biggest hunting or fishing trophy?

A: I shot a big eight-pointer up around Pelican Rapids four years ago.

Q: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you bring?

A: Food, probably another person and a boat so I could leave. I don’t want to stay there, man (laughs).

Q: Do you have a favorite food?

A: The chicken strip melt at Perkins.

Q: Is Perkins your favorite restaurant?

A: It’s probably Buffalo Wild Wings.

Q: What’s the hottest sauce you’ve had at Buffalo Wild Wings?

A: Not very hot, probably Asian Zing. I can’t handle that hot stuff.

Q: What genre of music do you listen to?

A: Doesn’t matter, but country is probably my favorite.

Q: Do you have a favorite country artist?

A: Eric Church.
