The Fergus Falls boys hockey team got its 2014 playoff run off to a good start Saturday as it defeated the Breckenridge/Wahpeton Blades 9-0 in the opening round of the Section 6A tournament.
Ean Goos gave the Otters a fast start in the first period as he took a Sam Rausch pass and deposited it in the net at the four minute mark. Kyler Peterson would add another goal (8:31) for Fergus off passes form Rausch and Colton Buseth and Ryan Smith would give the Otters a three-goal lead at the end of the period with an assist from Peter Johnson.
Fergus would continue to pad its lead in the second period as Peterson and Smith would add two more goals to put the Blades in a 5-0 deficit.
Peterson would tally a hat trick at the 2:56 mark in the third period as Rausch and Buseth assisted on the goal. The Otters did not let up as Johnson, Tosten Mann and Alex Phillipe each flipped in a goal in the final period.
Senior captain Rausch would finish the game with a plus-one playmaker, recording four assists in the game, while Buseth also had a playmaker with three assists.
Fergus spent most of its time around the opponent’s net as it peppered the Blades with 47 shots on goal, while the Otters’ netminder Andrew MacFarlane turned away 11 shots.
The Otters will now travel to St. Cloud to take on the third seeded Apollo Eagles at 5:15 p.m Tuesday. Fergus defeated Apollo 1-0 in its last meeting, but the Eagles recorded a split in the two-game series.
