Vikings send three to state

PELICAN RAPIDS – In front of their home town crowd, Danny Franco, Hobert Diaz and Eddie Ramos qualified for the 2014 Class A state tournament Saturday.

Franco (113 lbs.) opened up the tournament with a major decision win over Blake Geraed of Staples-Motley 10-0. Franco would then win a close decision over West Central Area’s Levi Larking 4-3. Franco (25-8) will open the state tournament with Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s Joey Majerus (37-3).

Diaz (160 lbs.) had the longest path to a state berth as he pinned Braeden Diaz of West Central and defeated Breckenridge’s Travis Miranowski in a 9-3 decision. Diaz would fall to Kyler Schlosser of Prairie Valley 8-3, but win 13-5 in wrestlebacks over Hayden Truax of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale for true second. Diaz (21-12) takes on Luke Norland (39-3) of Jackson County Central in opening round of state.

Ramos (220 lbs.) path saw him defeat Wadena-Deer Creek’s Caleb Monson by fall and follow with a 11-6 decision over Dana Berg of Barnesville. Ramos would claim runner-up as Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale’s Dillon Card by pinfall. Ramos (23-11) will take on Eric Norgrant (36-6) of Wabasha-Kellog in the first round of state.

The Vikings also placed five wrestlers including Dakota Pixley (3rd, 132 lbs.), Alex Diaz (4th, 152 lbs.), Casey Kulsrud (4th, 138 lbs.), Nick Thompson (5th, 170 lbs.) and Jason Meyer (6th, 106 lbs.).
