Congrats to GED graduates

The graduation ceremony for the General Education Development (GED) program was recently held in the Media Center at the Roosevelt Education Center.

Nine graduates and approximately 100 guests attended the GED Graduation Reception held at Roosevelt Education Center on Feb. 3, 2014. Each graduate received a certificate of achievement and a commemorative tassel.

The Fergus Falls Adult Basic Education (FFABE) is a Community Education program for our area communities.

Many students achieve their goal of earning a GED under the guidance of Mary Matteson, community education director; Judy Suiter, ABE coordinator; teaching staff and volunteers.

The main program FFABE offers is the GED exam preparation for four exams in language arts, math, science and social studies.

They also provide additional coursework in basic reading, writing, math and computer skills; college, job and career readiness; and online instruction in all skill areas.

During the last Monday’s graduation ceremony, we heard an inspirational speech prepared by GED 2013 graduate, Desiree Christenson and excellent guitar music shared by graduate Wade Schnoor.

Susan Ward, FFABE instructor, shared a moving story about an Otter Tail County Detention Facility student who achieved her GED diploma. The Fergus Falls PEO/DU group provided decorations and refreshments for the reception.

In my graduation speech I shared the following…

Diploma — what does it mean? Wikipedia states that a diploma is a certificate or deed issued by an educational institution, such as a university, that testifies that the recipient has successfully completed a particular course of study or confers an academic degree.

The General Educational Development (GED) Test is designed for people who, for various reasons, did not graduate from high school but want a certificate equivalent to the traditional high school diploma.

So that was a summary of the technical definition, but what does this diploma really mean to the recipients?

I would bet those in attendance that night would agree that the GED diploma means a sense of accomplishment, pride, perseverance, opportunity and even relief and joy!!
