Fergus girls get scare from Sabres

SARTELL — Led by a 30-point night from senior Bailey Strand, the Fergus Falls girls basketball team got another win on Tuesday night with a 63-58 victory over the Sartell-St. Stephen Sabres.

Strand scored 14 of her points off of free throws, hitting 87 percent of her shots from the line. She also had six rebounds.

At the half, the Otters held a 35-26 lead that the Sabres continued to chip away at in the second half. It wasn’t the typical night for the Otters, who have built a season-long string of dominant victories, even against its toughest opponents. The Otters had 26 turnovers on the night and only took 12 away from Sartell.

Anna Monke helped carry the effort with 14 points. She also had a team-leading seven rebounds and blocked four shots.

Despite hitting foul trouble early, Brianna Rasmusson managed six assists. The Otters had to step up and fill in for its missing guard who was out for a good portion of the game early on.

The Otters were also victorious in JV play, topping the Sabres 55-43. Katelyn Strand led with 18 points.

The Otters are back on its home court at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night to finish the Holiday Classic championship against Breckenridge that was postponed in December.
