Spartans start season 3-1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. —The M State Spartan baseball team got their season off to a great start over the weekend as it went 3-1.

On Saturday, the Spartans split with Erie Community College losing the first game 5-4, but picking up a win in the second game 5-0.

Dan Hoy was saddled with the loss, going 4 2/3 innings, while teammates Matt Bergman and Gabe Pankonin each recorded and RBI in game one.

In the second game, Ryan Fransen threw a complete game shutout, allowing seven hits and sitting down five.

Gunner Linstaedt led the Spartans going 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Spartans would follow a great Saturday finish with a sweep of MCAC foe Rainy River in Sunday’s doubleheader.

In game one, M State used a big fourth inning to take home a 7-5 victory.

Carter Paulson led Spartan hitters going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Kyle Singer and Austin Hanson each had a hit and run scored in the win.

Lindstaedt got the win going six innings, striking out eight and giving up two hits.

In the nightcap, Spartan pitcher Luke Schwarz was dealing as he struck out 15 battlers in a 8-3 complete game performance.

Paulson led the charge from the plate going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and four RBI. Teammate Jake Tharaldson finished the afternoon going 2-for-4 with three runs scores, a stolen base and an RBI.

The Spartans will take on Kishwaukee College in a nine inning game at 3 p.m. Monday.
