ROSEMOUNT — It was a busy weekend for the M State Lady Spartan softball team. The Spartans headed to Rosemount for the Minnesota Athletic Conference crossover tournament and took home two victories.
M State opened against Hibbing and took a 9-1 win in five innings.
Brett Brockpahler earned the win and did not give up an earned run. Brockpahler improved her season record to 3-0 and has a streak of 17 innings.
Tanis Lura led the Spartans offensively in the game with two hits and two RBI. Brockpahler also went two for two and scored three runs.
The Spartans’ fortune turned in its second game against Rainy River, however. The Spartans dropped their first game of the year and lost 8-1 as its offense hit a road block. Brockpahler extended her scoreless streak to 19 before Rainy River put up five runs in the third.
In its third game, M State ran into another difficult challenge and lost 10-2 to Minnesota West. Brockpahler and Logan Redetzke drove in runs in the second inning, but the Lady Jays responded with three runs in the bottom of the second and added seven in the fourth. The loss sent the Spartans season record to 4-2 on the year.
In its fourth game, the Spartans finally bounced back and gained a victory over Vermillion Community College 12-3. Brockpahler earned another win on the mound for the Spartans as she pitched all five innings. Brockpahler allowed three runs in the first inning but was able to swing some composure and pitched four scoreless innings.
Maria Johnson and Danielle Pratt both led the Spartan offense with three RBI. Gabby Stocks finished the game with three hits and two RBI. Kat Kinney also drove in two runs with a single.
In its final game, the Spartans dropped a close 9-7 matchup to the Northland Community and Technical College Pioneers.
With Brockpahler on the mound, the Pioneers were still able to find their swing and took a 5-0 by the third inning.
M State fought back and finally tied the game in the top of the fifth. Donna Ehnert led off the inning with a single and Redetzke reached on an error. Brockpahler, Teresa Moenkedick, Kinney and Stocks followed with RBI singles to even the game at 5-5. Stocks then scored on a fielder’s choice and gave the Spartans a 6-5 lead.
The Pioneers knotted the game back up in the bottom of the fifth, however, and the Spartans failed to score in its half of the sixth. The Pioneers then scored three runs for a 9-6 lead.
Kinney led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run, but after two hits by Johnson and Pratt the Spartans failed to capitalized.
With the final loss, the Lady Spartans hold a season record of 5-3. It will begin its Southern Division schedule as soon as weather permits.
